Life so far in 2009

It's been awhile.... and it's a quiet evening at work, so I thought I'd be a bit bad and do a catch-up post. Like everyone else, I'm feeling the heat today. Bunnies and chooks felt it worst - I had to do an emergency mission at lunchtime to cool down heatstruck bunnies and build them temporary accomodation on the cold side of the house. (Their hutch is partially shaded (facing east) but not enough to cope with a day like today. So there I was at lunchtime, covering cages with wet towels and providing extra water-trays for all. (Bunnies generally hate getting wet. It is an indicator of how hot they were that they happily lay in their water trays.) Chooks too got the towel and tray treatment, their dust-bath tray becoming a temporary paddling pool.

The garden is doing great, though it's starting to get beyond the neat spring-time look and into the full-on summer jungle. I find myself out watering at 10pm every 2-3 days to maximise water absorption, which is rather nice really - except that the mozzies munch me. Courgettes are going into full production mode, which means we can barely keep up. Beans are a bit behind since they got hit by the late frost, but the borlottis are producing. Tomatoes are covered in green fruit, swelling up and looking very promising - if only I could keep up with tying them back! I fear I'm going to end up with my usual tomato jungle. Oh well, they still produce! We've had some very yummy Lebanese cucumbers too, and the carrots are sweet, crunchy and divine. I'm between crops of snowpeas though - must improve my succession planting.

The last couple of weeks have been a mish-mash of work (no annual leave left after the trip last year, so worked through Christmas - very quiet though, and the misbehaving brats all seem to have sodded off for now so it's pretty good), folks down for Christmas (which was really great) and corset making. I'm just finishing off my last commission piece before I really get stuck into doing stuff for the upcoming exhibition.

Yep, I'm doing another exhibition in March, in the Cloisters Gallery at The Arts Centre again. Going to be much more steampunky this time, as that's what's currently floating my boat. Details as soon as I get the publicity stuff finished, but it's also going to be more of a group exhibition, with three very talented peeps joining me to contribute sculpture, metalwork and jewellery. :-)

Then... the unknown. I'm going to be re-vamping Bastet Creations to be more in line with my current committments and what I want to produce. I'll probably use the exhibition as a launch of the new incarnation. Still working out the details though.

Mum has just suggested building a trellis to shade the bunnies. And it could double as a bean tepee thingy. Green absorbs heat very well.

Trellis is a good idea - green things always provide much cooler shade. Just don't know how we could fit it into that space though. Still, it hasn't been nearly as hot again since that day. Just a freak combination of clear, dry weather with out the usual cooling easterly.

Hope all's going well at your end of the world - keep us posted with details! :-)

Yay, looking forward to seeing your exhibition (having missed the last one). Text or email me if you feel like catching up sometime soon - happy to be a sounding board for the business side of Bastet Creations if you want one..
